James Groome picked up this Alpine Blue 1968 GTO hardtop from it's second owner. James tells us, "Original options included a 400ci HO 360hp engine, 4-speed M-20 transmission, 3.55 Safe-t-trac rear, headrests, power antenna, hideaways, rear defogger, Rally II, and redline tires. The Protect-O-Plate and a recall letter were in the console box when I got it home. Its currently undergoing a
frame-off restoration." James is no stranger to GTO restorations. Click here to see some pictures of a Gold 1970 Judge convertible that he restored.

This is a shot of the data plate in this Alpine Blue 1968 GTO. The data plate for a 1968 GTO is located under the hood on the driver's side of the cowl, just in front of the windshield. Decode the 1968 data plate with our Stats Explorer by clicking here. Let's decode it! The 68 is for the 1968 model year. The 2 is for Pontiac. The 42 is for the GTO model. The 37 is for a 2-door hardtop. PON is for the Pontiac Michigan assembly plant. The 1570 is the sequential body number - which doesn't seem to have enough digits. The 244 is for the parchment bucket seats. The D-D is for the Alpine Blue upper (roof) and lower paint.

David Collie is in the process of restoring this April Gold 1968 LeMans hardtop. David tell this story, "This is my real $500 little old lady car. I bought 5-6 years ago after the little old lady passed away. Originally it had a 350ci engine, 2-speed auto on the column, AC, and bucket seats. To have a good driver I added the '72 400ci engine, His & Hers Hurst shifter, and 3.23 Posi rear. The top should be painted Premevera beige instead of white. I really like seeing cars with painted tops which was common in the late 60's."

The interior of David's April Gold 1968 LeMans project looks pretty good. It has the optional shoulder belts. They are clipped to the headliner in their storage position. Those were very inconvenient to use and store. Thank goodness for the eventual invention of the seatbelt retractor!

Here's the '72 400ci engine that David is building for his 1968 LeMans. The original 350ci engine had a rear main seal leak. David decided to build a 400 instead of the 350.

Meridian Turquoise 1968 GTO hardtop owned by Gregory Reid. Gregory adds, "I don't believe that the cars you have chosen to represent the beautiful 1968 color, Meridian Turquoise actually represent well. In fact, I'm doubtful that they are painted that color. Maybe they were originally, but not any more. This is a picture of my recently purchased, currently under mild restoration, factory original 'K' code car in Meridian Turquoise with '220' code Turquoise interior. I'm fairly certain that it's the original interior as the original owner (RIP) still had the car in his posession 5 years ago."
