Ronnie Robinson just finished his Molten Bronze 1966 LeMans hardtop. Ronnie tells us more, "I bought it rusty but running about a year ago [2006] for $1,500. Since I'm balling on a budget, I did a lot of the body work at the base auto hobby shop. When I left for deployment I dropped it off with my friend Fred. He put the disc brake conversion on and finished the body. He also shaved the handles and painted it for me. I love the color and my chic went and bought me some 20 inch Foose Nitrous wheels. It's my first project and I'm lov'in it. I hope you do too." CLICK->

Close-up of the rust under the paint around the window. You can tell a lot about a car's history by studying a photo like this. In 1965 or 1966, the car was painted with a reddish primer coat at the factory. The original color was a darker blue. Then let's guess that the car got a repaint with a slightly lighter shade of blue around 1980. It was probably a decent paint job because there is evidence of gray primer between the two blue paint jobs. During the 40 years or so that the car was driven, water collected around and under the windshield moulding. We know the moulding was here because of the factory rivet in the center of the photo. That is where the moulding piece clips onto the car. Repairs on this area will take several hours. Methods to repair this type of rustout will vary. if an owner wanted to keep this car longterm, he might weld in a replacement window channel. If the car is being fixed up for quick sale, and owner might just Bondo the holes shut and then repaint over the evidence. Then it would be the next owner's plight to discover the damage later after the Bondo bubbles up in this frequently watery area. Check back here to see how George handles the restoration of this classic car. CLICK->

Here is the broadcast sheet which was used on the assembly line to identify options to attach to the car. These sheets are usually tossed into the car during assembly. They are typically found under the rear seat, under the carpet, or on top of the gas tank. CLICK->
Montero Red 1966 GTO hardtop owned by Jay Konkle from Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Jay tells us, "I bought my car about 10 years ago. When I got it had 70,000 miles on the clock. The body was as solid as they come. No rust to speak of and it still had the original vinyl top and upholstery. I won't tell what I paid for back then - it would make you sick. Since that time I have added power disk brakes and rebuilt the chassis front and back - new springs bushings shocks etc. The rear has 3 inch spacers to lift the
rear a bit. The power steering was rebuilt with a 3-to-1 gear box from a 70 LeMans. I have coated headers and 2.5" exhaust with X-Pipe and Flowmasters. I rebuilt the 10-bolt rear end it is a stock 3.55. The motor has been completely gone through balanced and blue printed with forged pistons, comp cam, electronic ignition, and a Tri-Power to top the power plant off. Last winter [2006] the car was stripped to bare metal, primed and repainted by CnC detailing in New Haven, Indiana. - normal stuff, clear coat base coat. I had all the stainless straightened and de-dented, re-chromed anything that needed it, and put a new vinyl top on. I go to shows all over northern Indiana and I am a member of the Northeast Indiana GTO Club and GTOAA. So if you see me, come say hi. I love to talk about GTOs." CLICK->
