Shot of the supercharged engine in Mark's gold 1972 LeMans hardtop. A supercharger is a forced induction system. It compresses the air flowing into the engine. See the fitting on the top of the carburetor. The advantage of compressing the air is that it lets the engine feed more air into each cylinder. More air means that more fuel can be stuffed in, too, so you get more power.

Another shot of the car's engine. Here it has a different supercharger setup on it. The typical boost provided by a supercharger is 6 to 8 pounds per square inch (psi). Normal atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi at sea level. I'll bet you a dollar that the gauge seen here facing the driver is a "boost" gauge.

Anaconda Gold 1972 Luxury LeMans hardtop courtesy of Adam Woodmancy from Manito, Illinois. Adam is the second owner of this car. Adam tells us more, "The car has 76K original miles and has been upgraded with a 467ci motor, TH-400 with transbrake, a pair of 12 bolts with 3.73 and 4.56 gears, three inch Pypes exhaust with X-pipe, and Dynomax mufflers. The car has won track championship in IHRA superstreet and three other top three finishes in four out of five years. I bought the car six years ago at age 16 for $300 and drove it daily to school, work, etc. People either love it or hate it, but I love it cause it's the only one like it that I've seen in person."
