In April of 2005 I received even more [startling] information about this same car. Here is what Scott (sttm4@comcast.net) said:
"Obviously you do a lot of work because you have pictures of my 2 GTOs on your site, and I don't even know how you got 'em. Here's my story...

I came into contact with this guy from New Hampshire who had 3 GTOs and willing to part with his 68 GTO convertible with 29,000 original miles. Told me the whole story about how the car was documented, mint condition and he had all the work professionally redone and assured me that as soon as I saw it, I would definitely take it. Doing my research I found this car on your site:

Convertible Top Color: black
Interior Color: red
Visible Options: air conditioning
VIN: 242678P24396
Owner: from Fort Lauterdale Florida FL
Posted: 07/01/2001

According to your site, the NH car sounded just like the one being sold in Florida in 2001 - you reprinted the whole ebay ad. The guy told me he had bought his car from the original owner in Florida and in case of coincidence I decided to print your info and take it with me. Took the 7 hr. journey to NH, got a hotel room, and met the guy in the morning. The VIN matched this car and at that moment I knew that his guy was lying about all the things he was saying that he had done to the car.

The engine code on this car is Y4, which is either a '72, '73 or '77 engine. The carborator was from something from '69. He kept insisting that the interior was so clean and so original but according to the body tag, the original color was "April Gold" with a black interior. He said the carb was a '69 because it was a "late build" but the build code shows that it was built in the 4th week of February. I asked for the documents but he just changed the subject. I didn't have the heart to show him your copy of the printed ad and matching VIN number!

I showed him the engine code and he said that since Pontiac rebuilt the engine, they probably filed off the serial number and re-stamped the block - never heard of such a thing. It did have a frame off restoration at some point. The underneath of the car was clean but overall not a good paint job - over-spray on door jams, etc. - definitely the 2nd paint job after the frame off. And definitely did NOT have only 29K miles... my guess is 129K!

I think the guy bought the car from FL, not checking it out and believing the ad; kept it for a few years and thought he could sell it to someone who wasn't going to check things out either, for a lot of money! Seeing that ad on your site, was an unbelievable coincidence and I was so glad I stumbled upon it. Just a little story for ya'. Thanks."
