Lucerne Blue 1972 GTO hardtop 455 HO 4-speed owned by Pat and Sandra Brown. This was our Picture Of The Week for 6/10/01. Pat commented on the stripes, "That stripe as listed on my build sheet says: Stripes-Vnyl, with a suggested retail price of $31.60, code 614. That $31.60 is a far cry of the $300.00 they go for now in the repro sites. My car was optioned with that stripe. I have asked John Sawruk about the stripe and he thinks very few actually got the stripe. I have found in a magazine back in the 80's that states something like 130 some odd cars actually got the striping option of the 5,673 GTOs built in '72." They also have a Cardinal Red 1972 GTO convertible clone. Click here to see pictures of both their cars.

In 2010, Pat wrote in to say the car was for sale: "This is 1 of 310 455 HO 4spd '72 GTO's built. Car is older restoration, completed in 1996. This is when I purchased the car. Still shows great, and has been my show driver. It is a great cruiser. Here are the Factory Options List as seen on PHS: GTO Safe-T-track - 3.55 AM/FM Stereo Wheels- Rally II Power Disc brakes Stripes - Vinyl, Unitized Ignition, Gauge- Tachometer 4spd HD Transmission - M22 'Rock Crusher', G70X14 WL FG, Steering Wheel - Formula, Power Steering - Variable ratio Air Inlet - HD Springs & Shocks - Firm, Custom Trim. Someone checked off a great order list. Very close to that of the WW5 option list. Only items missing on this car from the WW5 list is the Body color (Bullet) mirrors and the Heavy Duty Y99 handling package. Car has approximately 105K miles on the body and 5K on the engine. Engine is original with the exception of the block and distributor. Has original carb installed. A rebuilt 455 short block was installed in 2006. Original heads (7F6) were freshened at that time. Block in the car is a correctly dated '72 455 block. I will include build up info with the sale. Also installed at that time was a new Centerforce street/strip clutch. The transmission is original to the car. I have verified the VIN stamping on the M22 case. Paint is still in great shape and shows nicely. Some minor nicks here and there, commensurate with the age of resto and driving of the car. Car originally came with Rally II's, 14" Honeycombs are on the car. NOS caps and rings were used. Correct Reproduction exhaust tips were installed when they became available about 10 years ago. I also have a recline passenger seat from a 1968, covered with '72 interior. A nice touch for your passenger on those long rides to shows. There is an aftermarket stereo installed under the dash. I hooked up the original stereo about 10 years ago for concourse Judging at the '98 Wichita GTOAA national convention. It worked then, but have since been disconnected to use the aftermarket stereo. It got a Bronze award at that time. Car runs great, zero rust underneath with only a small rust bubble coming from the lower right rear window area. $25K. Original ralley II wheels will go with the car."

Interior Color: black
Visible Options: honeycomb wheels stripes spoiler

Wheels Up Goat: I also wonder about #'s on 72s that came with stripe. My PHS duplicate window sticker has stripes-vnyl $31.00 code 614. What was left of white stripe was found on inside of L/F fender and door with original Sundance Orange paint. VIN 2D37X2P196852 455 HO, air inlet-HD code 601. Black Int. If not one of a kind then... it is now! 11.38 ET,1.52 60 ft. Now sports six cans black primer on frame off racetoration. Some day "soon" Sundance Orange/White Stripe 1/325...1/130... How about 1/1!!!. I love this car. Rakes and shovels fall off wall when I start it. The dome light cover ends up in the back seat. Anyway, I wonder about the stripe. Until next time, GOATCHA!
Killroy's owner in New Mexico: This is a perfect 1972 GTO! The side stripe seems to remind me of the GT LeMans package? (edited)
hangfire04252: I wish my 72 Goat looked that good. Still working on it. Mine was originally Lucerne Blue with an Ivory white interior, WW5 option with a Turbo 400, and it had the code 614 stripe according to PHS. Purchased from Public Pontiac in Skokie, Ill. and lived life in Texas. It lost the 455 long ago and now has a 1969 428.
ps67smith@yahoo.com: Absolutely marvelous car. I wish I could get excited about the stripe package, but it doesn't do much for me. My car is coded for one as well. 1972 GTO Y code 455 Cardinal Red with black custom interior. I'm leaving the stripe off for now. I see it has layers, blue and white. Does that mean it goes to metal between the vinyl? I can see that would be a problem with peeling then.
luch: I just checked the 1972 Lemans options sales list available on PY forums and it showed D98 tape stripes were sold on 15.1 percent of the 1971 production run. That worked out to a bit more than 850 cars. This doesn't include breakdown by color, but figure maybe half black and half white. Pretty rare.
gmpart398: I use to own 1 of 310 455 ho 4speed. My car was the same color blue as yours except no stripe. I would like some help on finding this car. I owned it 1972 with 24,000 miles. Does anyone know were to start? Please advise. (edited)
