dragonhead00: | | What really stinks is that this mag had named the SD455 GTO "Car of the Year". Premature and a bit of wishful thinking. |
charlie: | | This was the tragedy that led to the 73 being so underrated for so long. the tide seems much smoother regarding the attitude towards 73's these days, but it took a looooong time to overcome the bad choices made by PMD. |
Hawk: | | Wasn't it stupid of Pontiac not to offer the SD in the '73 GTO? I mean, they offered it in the Trans Am, so why not in the GTO? They both were musclecars; why emaciate the GTO? Frustrating. |
charlie: | | They said noise concerns killed the SD for 73 in the GTO and Grand Am. Apparently the Trans Am didn't have that issue...more likely the shortage of available blocks caused the deletion.... still a shame.. |
Wally: | | I worked at a Pontiac Dealership 1971-1974. I remember a guy ordered a new Grand Am with the 455 SD. The car was White no vinyl top with a red interior. The guy was kinda bummed when it arrived w/o the SD coz Pontiac pulled the plug on it in these cars. The guy traded in a 70 Buick Skylark, Stage 1, 4 speed. Took that car for a drive, what a beast. The dealer had a 73 GTO demonstrator that I bought when the 74s came out. Florentine red with a white vinyl top, red interior, 400 automatic with console, 323 posi, in dash 8 track, Honeycomb wheels. Pretty cool car for a kid just graduated from high school. The sticker on that car was a tick over $4200.00. Times have changed I guess. |
Hawk: | | The '70 Buick 4-speed Stage I may have been a beast, but Pontiac had an answer to it: The '70 4-speed Ram Air IV. I'd put that up against the Stage I any day. |
Wally: | | Gotta agree with you there. I've got a real appreciation for all makes even though I was a True Pontiac devotee in my younger days. Just wish some of the 'orange motor guys' would admit that their brothers @ GM (Pontiac, Olds, Buick) turned out some pretty wicked stuff too. Please let's not start a war here, just saying.... |
hobie: | | Jim Wangers writes about this car and the award from 'Cars' magazine for a car never produced. |
