(from the 1964 Lot) Vintage picture of Bruce Wheeler's silver 1964 GTO sport coupe at the races. Bruce had this story to tell, "I bought this car new, in Bangor, Maine, while serving in the Air Force there. It was the very first GTO sold in the state of Maine. I took delivery of it on February 8, 1964 - the day before The Beatles made their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was a bare-bones coupe, with all of the RPO performance parts that were available at the beginning of that model's run. The only 'luxury' option was the AM radio. It had a 4-speed, 348/389, 3.55 posi (I think) and not much else. I added short exhaust 'cutouts,' and removed the tailpipes - the exhaust dumped down and to the sides immediately behind the mufflers. I got rid of the vacuum carb linkage as soon as I could, and replaced it with the mechanical Royal Oak Pontiac kit. I added a set of chromed (slotted) 'custom' rims, very rare in those days, and installed a steering column-mounted Sun tach. Ran it on the street, and at the drags, as often as I could. With sticky Atlas 'Buchron' street tires (8.50x14) on the back, the car ran a best ET of 13.54 @ 105 MPH. I sold it in November, 1966 when I bought a new '67 427/435 'Vette roadster. That GTO is my all-time faviorite ride! Sure wish I still had it today! Aloha!"
