Honestly - I don't think they're gone for good. I really believe GM will put them on 'hiatus' and bring them back at some point in the future. For the moment, they've got to be profitable again. Pontiac's sales just kept going down hill after GM turned all them all into re-badged Chevy's.

It is unfortunate that GM moved too late to correct this problem. The G series cars and Solstice were some of the nicest they produced in recent decades, especially the G8. And though ugly it may be, the Vibe was successful amongst the younger crowd.

I guess the only question is, what of GM's future after the Government takeover, and how long till they're independent again?

I was 16 years old in 1964 when I purchased the ultimate car ever (in my opinion) - a 1964 GTO convertible, close ratio 4 speed w Hurst shifter, 4 barrel, no consolel (adds weight), tach in the dash, sliver body, white top, dark blue inteior (bucket seats), and chrome exhaust splitters. I had the car all through high school. It was my pride and joy! I took great care of it making my girl friends take their shoes off to get in it (one example). I enrolled it in the Royal Ponitac "Bobcat" club. When I went away to college, my father ended up selling it for $1,895 to by a truck for his business. That was a major life impacting event in my life. Now, I look at car auctions, but have never seen any GTO exactly like it (the exact interior/exterior color combination). I often wonder what happened to it. I only have 1 picture of it - I never could imagine not having it as my ride (famous last words I am sure). I don't know how to track it to see if it is still alive. Can anybody help with some suggestions? I don't have the VIN, but know the dealer's name and approximate purchase date. I'll never forget the day I received my car - the dealer owner and his head mechanic where there. They put the top down for me with the boot and asked if I had ever driven a close ratio 4 speed. I said just a panel truck (my dad's). They replied,"well I don't know how well you can drive, but you better be good at pointing this thing". How right they were! I would love to get it back, not just or the memories, but to have the ultimate car again, but I probably can't afford it now anyway. Thanks for reading a small portion of my GTO experience.

I kind of figured this would happen. Lots of water under the Pontiac bridge. I bought a new 06 GTO, when the market was driving the classics out of my budget range. So, I did what any respectable owner would do: I made slight mods that the factory should have (shorty headers, full true 49-st legal cats with perf exhaust; cold air intake; tweaked performance chip; etc. Now has 370 rwhp. Not the true GTO, but in my garage, still is my car. I used to hear, when I was in my teens in the 70's, how people derided the 64-66 GTO's as ugly. Interesting how times change. That's the way I see it.

The first car I ever owned was a Pontiac. I think its a shame that gm will drop this line. following the re-release of the GTO, probably the truest car released to date. please pontiac dont dont do this. let the camaro go not pontiac.

I was sadden by GM'S move I have owned several Pontiacs that I have enjoyed through out the years; a 78 Trans am with a 72 455h.o. that I replaced the 400 with. two Grand ams a 1988, and a 1995 .I still have the 1995 it has 182,000 miles on it ,and is still going strong. I also had a 1994 Trans am GT, that had 176,000 miles on it when I traded it in on a 2005 Vibe. In the future I plan to get a 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO, I perfer the impulse blue with the blue leather seats. I pray that GM survives and does not end up like Studebaker did. GM does make some excellent products, if the american public will only believe that.

I have owned Pontiacs for 30+ years and still own and drive them daily. I am upset and troubled that this nameplate is
being snuffed out for NO good reason. I also believe that Pontiac has been mishandled for many years. Management is
to blame for this needless end to GMs strongest performance brand. What will replace it? Nothing that I can see
currently offered. GM certainly isn't going to create a new one, so the performance segment dissapears. In my opinion
this is NOT what the public wants. It seems like GM is doing this deliberately just to kill the brand. They did it to Oldmobile &
Bonnneville as well. It didn't make sense then and it is more of the same today. No wonder GM is losing marketshare!
